How to Care for Your Indoor Plants in the Winter

Winter can be tough on indoor plants due to reduced light, dry air, and fluctuating temperatures. With the right care, you can keep your plants thriving through the colder months. Here’s how to adjust your plant care routine for winter success.

➡ Adjust Lighting
Winter means shorter days and less sunlight. Move your plants closer to windows where they can receive maximum light, preferably south- or west-facing. Consider supplementing with grow lights if natural light is limited.

➡ Regulate Temperature
Keep your plants in rooms with consistent temperatures between 65-75°F. Avoid placing them near cold drafts, heaters, fireplaces, or directly against chilly windows. Sudden temperature changes can stress plants.

➡ Water Less Frequently
Indoor plants need less water during winter as they grow slower. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering. Use room-temperature water to avoid shocking the roots.

➡ Increase Humidity
Indoor heating systems can dry out the air, leaving plants thirsty for humidity. Group plants together, use a humidifier, or place a tray of water with pebbles beneath the pots to maintain moisture levels.

➡ Dust and Clean Leaves
Dust can block light and hinder photosynthesis. Gently wipe down leaves with a damp cloth every few weeks to keep them clean and healthy.

➡ Adjust Fertilizing
Most plants go dormant in winter and don’t require fertilization. Pause feeding until spring when active growth resumes, unless you have winter-flowering varieties.

➡ Monitor for Pests
Winter can attract pests like spider mites and aphids due to dry air and weakened plants. Inspect leaves regularly and treat any infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

➡ Repot and Prune if Needed
While winter isn’t ideal for major repotting, you can trim dead leaves and stems. Save major repotting for spring, unless the plant is severely root-bound.

Tips:

Rotate plants regularly to ensure even light exposure.

Use a moisture meter to avoid overwatering.

Consider insulating plant pots near cold windows with a protective barrier.

Choose hardy indoor plants like snake plants or pothos if you're new to plant care.
